Trudy Muthoni
First joining Rotaract club of Langata in Nairobi before relocating to the UK and joining the Rotaract Club of London, we asked her some questions to shine a light on this person of action.
As part of Rotaract, what projects have you been involved with? What did these project’s achieve, how was this made possible and why is this important to you?
Over the years, I’ve wholeheartedly committed myself to Rotary’s motto of Service Above Self — which, as it turns out, involves a lot of heart, teamwork, and the occasional dusty site visit. I’ve been fortunate to contribute to several projects across the globe, but one that truly stands out is my former club’s signature initiative, Kipepeo Safe Space.
Kipepeo means butterfly in Swahili, and the project focused on creating a safe, nurturing hub for children from under-privileged communities, a place where they could simply be children. This quiet study space allowed them to learn together, access reading materials, and use computers to explore the wider world (often with more curiosity than most adults!).
I was serving as Community Service Director when we formalised this partnership, which has since grown and remained strong to this day. With support from our mother club, we supplied books, arts and crafts materials, set up a small computer lab, and donated water tanks, a vital resource in an area with limited water supply.
Seeing the pure joy in the children’s smiles never failed to warm my heart, and those moments are exactly why I keep showing up for Rotary. They’re a powerful reminder that sometimes, the smallest actions can create the biggest ripple effects.
How have you been able to connect with others thanks to Rotaract?
Absolutely! I have been able to meet and network with such incredible professionals from all walks of life who have not only inspired me but shared with me wisdom and knowledge of topics I did not know about. It is such connections where I have made such incredible lifetime friends.
What opportunities has Rotaract given you to go beyond your local community?
Being Action Director! I served on the GBI board 2024-2025 and I was able to make an incredible difference on a national level. I helped local clubs grow their membership by connecting them with fellow professionals seeking a club in their local area. I was also very excited to be a part of the GBI conference planning, which was a success.
How do you think you’ve grown as a person thanks to Rotaract? What opportunities have you had for your own personal development?
Rotaract has opened the door to countless opportunities for me, the most recent being an intensive four-day crash course in PRINCE2 project management. While it was certainly fast-paced, the principles I gained have been invaluable. They’ve helped me structure my projects more effectively at work, communicate with greater clarity, and approach my responsibilities with a higher level of professionalism — all without needing a crystal ball or a 300-page project manual.
Why should someone get invoiced with Rotaract and what advice would you give them?
Rotaract is the best place to find a community and new friends who are like-minded especially if you relocate to a new country.
What’s your proudest moment as a Rotaractor?
The joy I see on the face of a person’s life that I have touched through a donation or giving my time to serve.
How does your Rotaract work reflect your passions or career goals?
My work in Rotaract closely reflects both my passions and my career goals, particularly my commitment to purposeful impact, strong governance, and data-informed decision-making.
At its core, Rotaract allows me to combine service with structure. Through roles such as Community Service Director and Action Director, I’ve led projects that require clear planning, stakeholder coordination, budgeting, and delivery against defined outcomes, the same skills I apply in my professional career. Initiatives like Kipepeo Safe Space reinforced my belief that sustainable impact comes from well-designed systems, not one-off efforts, a principle that strongly aligns with my approach to work.
Rotaract has also strengthened my leadership and communication skills. Many of my stakeholders are volunteers from diverse backgrounds, which has taught me how to translate complex ideas into clear, engaging messages whether that’s explaining a project plan, aligning teams around shared goals, or reporting progress in a way that drives action.
If you could describe Rotaract in three words, what would they be?
